History + Vision

Since 2000, The Mobius Group has provided accounting consulting to mission-driven nonprofit organizations using a simple concept to propel its work: create elegant solutions. An “elegant solution” is a mathematical and engineering term meaning to achieve the maximum desired result in the simplest possible way.  Think about that: the maximum desired result in the simplest possible way.

We know that some of you may see the whole accounting function as a necessary evil, with the emphasis on “evil”.  We’d put it back on “necessary.”  You bet, we “count the beans”. But we know in the end, the beans are not the point; they are a pivotal part of the end result — your mission, your purpose, your story.

We take our name from the Mobius strip, with its single surface — no inside, no outside, one continuous edge.  We partner with each client, building strong relationships.  No inside, no outside.  We build strong, accountable financial systems that provide crucial information to internal and external stakeholders.

We help you know where you stand, with solid data and a firm foundation to propel your actions. We believe this, like everything you do, is “mission-critical.” We keep you focused on your mission.

  • Megan Genest Tarnow
    Megan Genest Tarnow Principal

Megan founded the Mobius Group in 2000 with a vision of providing rock-solid financials to small nonprofit organizations. She comes from a long line of small business people, and began working in her family’s hearing aid dealership at the age of 10. With a BA in Theatre from Gustavus Adolphus College with a focus on Directing, she’s a pro at keeping an eye on both the details and the big picture, and she knows how to translate Accounting into Plain English. Her global viewpoint  was honed during four years in Japan with her husband, Tom, where she taught English, studied Japanese, performed butoh, and gave birth to her oldest son.

She has been a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor since 2002, has a Mini-MBA in NonProfit Finance from the University of Saint Thomas, and has been a QuickBooks Instructor for WomenVenture. She is a Sleeter Group Certified Consultant, a member of the National Advisors Network, and of the NonProfit Financial Group of Minnesota. Basically, she takes this nonprofit finance stuff REALLY seriously. Megan has developed a mantra that guides her work: Take your time. Think it through. Do it once. Do it right.

  • Shea Tarnow
    Shea Tarnow Technology Manager

Shea started with Mobius in 2015, adding support where it was needed on a part-time basis. As Megan’s son, he has grown up around the family business, and watched it grow as well. Shea is currently studying business at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, and applying his studies directly to his work. Shea has quickly become knowledgeable of basic accounting principles and programs, and has helped Mobius to build its accounting software integrations. As the youngest member of the Mobius team, he has a keen eye for technology and is working every day to solve issues that affect both our clients and our employees.

Shea is a certified Bill.com “Guru” and is also a certified TSheets and Hubdoc ProAdviser.

  • Nada Filipovich
    Nada Filipovich Bookkeeping Consultant

Nada began working with Mobius in 2012, after several years of raising children and being an uber-volunteer. You know the kind: Room Mother, Bake Sale Coordinator, Auction Co-Chair, Church Treasurer. As the kids graduated and her schedule finally began to open up, she looked for a position where she could continue to help people. Turns out,  this is right up her alley. Her friendly nature and positive attitude bely her fanatic attention to detail. Nada will make darn sure you get your receipts turned in! And then, if you’re lucky, she’ll give you one of her famous cupcakes.
